About Earth Hour
Earth Hour started in 2007 in Sydney, Australia when 2.2 million individuals and more than 2,000 businesses turned their lights off for one hour to take a stand against climate change. Only a year later and Earth Hour had become a global sustainability movement with more than 50 million people across 35 countries participating. Global landmarks such as the Sydney Harbour Bridge, CN Tower in Toronto, Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, and Rome’s Colosseum, all stood in darkness, as symbols of hope for a cause that grows more urgent by the hour. In March 2009, hundreds of millions of people took part in the third Earth Hour. Over 4000 cities in 88 countries officially switched off to pledge their support for the planet, making Earth Hour 2009 the world’s largest global climate change initiative. www.earthhour.org

House of Representatives to switch off lights for a better world - Brazilian Environment Ministry joins in Earth Hour event

The House of Representatives will be switching off all its lights during Earth Hour on Saturday March 26 from 8:30 pm to 9:30 pm as part of Brazil’s Earth Hour manifestations. The event takes place worldwide under the initiative the WWF environmental network. In Brazil, under the banner of “switch off the lights to see a better world”, companies, governments, organisations, communities and individuals are joining the movement, which seeks to call attention to the global warming process.

On behalf of the House, first secretary, representative Rosa de Freitas (PMDB-Espirito Santo) signed an official document of adherence this Tuesday (15). The member of parliament expressed her enthusiasm for the Earth Hour event and promised to make it widely known. This is the third time that the House of Representatives has participated in the movement.

Also on Tuesday, the Brazilian Environment Ministry formalised its participation in Earth Hour with the signing of an official document of adherence. "This initiative is important in the context of engaging in the process of achieving a low-carbon economy and because it will lead to actions beyond the sixty minutes of the Earth Hour itself. It is a starting point for adopting new sustainable attitudes," declared Minister Izabella Teixeira.

WWF-Brazil CEO Denise Hamú, who participated in the signing ceremony, stated that Brazil, “as a mega-diverse country,” needs to set an example to the world . “The participation of the House of Representatives, representing Brazilian society at large, and of the Ministry of the Environment, the executive body for environmental policies, is an unequivocal sign of the importance of this movement and of heightening society’s sensitivity to the issue.”

"Support given by these institutions underscores the importance of harmonising human activities with the conservation of biodiversity and of stimulating the rational use of natural resources,” added Hamú.

In the same way as thousands of other cities around the world, 14 Brazilian cities, among them five state capitals, also signed the Term of Adherence. All of them will be switching off the lights illuminating their monuments, squares, buildings and homes.

Among state capitals participating in Brazil are Natal,  Aracaju, Goiânia, Rio de Janeiro and Vitória. Other large cities participating include Barueri (São Paulo), Baturité (Ceará), Caçador (Santa Catarina), Divinolândia (São Paulo), Jumirim (São Paulo), Osasco (São Paulo), Pedreiras (Maranhão), Poços de Caldas (Minas Gerais) and Ribeirão Pires (São Paulo).

The adherence of the state capitals is being achieved with the support of the Brazilian Mayors Organisation (Frente Nacional de Prefeitos -FNP).

The 2011 edition of Earth Hour is expected to bring together thousands of people around the important icons of their cities, which will be kept in darkness for one hour. That is because, in addition to the symbolic act of demonstrating public awareness of environmental disequilibrium on the Planet , many local authorities will be organising public acts and shows.

In Sydney, Australia, actions include substituting the current models of light bulbs illuminating streets and parks by LED bulbs. In Shenyang, China, 38,000 hectares of land will be re-forested.

The global hour of darkness will take place on all seven continents, with all G20 countries, thousands of cities, and iconic landmarks set to join with hundreds of millions of people across the world to celebrate action to protect our environment.

“This year, we need everyone to go beyond the hour.”

For the first time WWF-Australia is showcasing some of the best ideas from around the country on how to live more sustainably with the WWF Earth Hour Awards.

Members of the public can sign up for Earth Hour 2011 and also see these inspiring stories at http://www.earthhour.org.au/ to vote for their favourite. The winners in each category will be announced at an event in Sydney to mark Earth Hour.

WWF Announces Official Chinese-Language Theme Song of Earth Hour 2011

BEIJING, March 17, 2011 – WWF today announced the launch of the official Chinese-language theme song of Earth Hour 2011: “Turn off the Light”, written and performed by Chinese musical duo and WWF Earth Hour China Ambassadors Yu Quan.

The melodic soft pop song urges governments, businesses and individuals everywhere to “Turn off the light; let’s make the change” by creating resonating mental images of the beauty of the planet, and the beauty within people when they protect the planet.

“It is a new experience for WWF to be able to communicate the messages of Earth Hour, of turning off lights and making one change for the planet, through song,” said Jim Gradoville, CEO, WWF China. “I am glad this experience comes through Yu Quan’s ‘Turn off the Light’. It is simply a beautiful song, which we’ll be playing often in my home.”

Hai Quan, one-half of the musical duo, said: “It was a privilege to write ‘Turn off the Light’ for WWF’s Earth Hour campaign. The song comes from the heart. Our lyrics mention polar bears, and your heart lighting up when you help the Earth because those are things we think about and have experienced. We care deeply about the environment, and as musicians, one of the best ways we can protect it is through our craft’s ability to reach and touch people.”

Yu Quan are keeping true to their lyrics to “make the change” in their personal lives by pledging to buy carbon offsets for tour-related air travel and to bring reusable tableware to all performances, rather than using disposable tableware.

Yu Quan are joined in the Earth Hour movement this year by a diverse cast of ambassadors. In China, these include WWF Earth Hour Global Ambassador Li Bingbing and WWF Earth Hour China Ambassador Li Yichun – who with her staff will stop using disposable products where possible, such as in dining and shopping.

Further, actress Wang Luodan; singer Fish Leong; and Happy Camp television hosts He Jiong, Li Weijia and Wu Xin; and Beijing Olympic champion Zhong Man have produced videos sharing their “one change” for the planet, and encouraging everyone to take part in Earth Hour.

- Governo do Nepal: comprometeu-se a pôr termo ao corte de árvores na Faixa Churiya, uma área de floresta de vital importância ecológica e sociológica que abrange mais de 23.000 Km2;

- A série infantil de televisão, Pocoyo: vai chegar aos seus milhões de fãs pré-escolares em todo o mundo durante o próximo ano; o objectivo é que se estimule as crianças sobre as questões ambientais através do humor;

- Nathi Mzileni: um jovem de 15 anos, da Suazilândia, foi inspirado a agir em 2010, quando se percebeu que sua cidade não participou na Hora do Planeta. Com a pretensão de sensibilizar as pessoas sobre a mudança climática, fundou um grupo na sua escola secundária, a que chamou Green Enviro; este ano vai sozinho fazer da Hora do Planeta uma realidade na sua cidade Natal Shimunye, naSuazilândia;

- Mengniu Dairy (Inner Mongolia Mengniu Dairy (Group) Co., Ltd.): a empresa chinesa de lacticínios comprometeu-se a duplicar o número de caixas de leite que recicla e aumentar o uso de embalagens certificadas pelo FSC;

- Lord Mayor de Sydney, Clover Moore MP: comprometeu-se a construir mais seis ciclovias separadas, a instalar luzes LED nos parques e ruas da cidade, e a endossar uma fábrica de tri-geração para prover energia de baixo carbono;

- Chloe Nicol: uma menina de 7 anos, da Austrália, está a guiar a sua escola no sentido de aumentar a reciclagem e reduzir o desperdício de energia. A escola inspirada pela menina, resolveu adoptar como uma das medidas de redução de energia, o fecho das cortinas em vez de usar ar condicionado para refrigerar todos os quartos;

- Parrys Raines: uma menina brasileira de 15 anos, convenceu a sua escola a instalar estações de abastecimento de água e fornecer a cada aluno e professor uma garrafa de bebida em aço inoxidável reutilizável para reduzir o desperdício de garrafas de plástico;

- CB Richard Ellis: querem ir além da hora em 2011, procurando ultrapassar a sua participação na Hora do Planeta 2010, em que conseguiram ter mais de 254 milhões de metros quadrados de imóveis apagados; pretendem igualmente dinamizar mensalmente eventos e outras actividades relacionadas com a temática Ambiente e Planeta junto dos seus colaboradores (Hora do Planeta, Dia da Terra, Dia da Construção Sustentável, Semana do Clima, etc.);

- Credit Suisse AG: tornou-se carbono neutro em 2010 através da sua iniciativa global “Credit Suisse Cares for Climate” (Credite Suisse preocupa-se com o Clima). Este ano, patrocina a Hora do Planeta em Singapura, e vai continuar a ir "além da hora" através do envio de pessoal para uma reserva florestal brasileira para prestarem apoio à pesquisa de campo sobre os efeitos das alterações climáticas;

- Power98FM: irá garantir que todas as luzes, computadores e equipamento serão desligados nos estúdios quando não estiverem em uso, e continuam a apoiar activamente as iniciativas da WWF;

- Jack e Rai: o duo pop de Singapura pop duo fez um compromisso de mudarem para um sistema mais eficiente de ar-condicionado com a regulação da temperatura em 24 graus Celsius e a assistirem menos televisão, jogarem menos jogos de vídeo, e tocar mais vezes a guitarra acústica para reduzir seu consumo de energia;

- Holiday Inn Atrium Singapore: comprometeu-se a substituírem as lâmpadas em todos os seus 504 quartos para lâmpadas de eficiência energética, LED;
